Foundations, basements and underground parking structures are continuously exposed to ground moisture, possible water pressure and construction joints. Defects in these areas are difficult to access and costly to repair after completion, so the waterproofing strategy should be established during the design stage.
Assess the water loadSystem selection begins with an assessment of soil conditions, groundwater level, hydrostatic pressure and drainage. The substrate, potential cracking and movement joints, geometry of the structure and whether the waterproofing is installed before or after the concrete works must also be considered.
Foundations and basementsThe waterproofing should form a continuous protective layer around the construction. Transitions between horizontal and vertical surfaces, pipe penetrations, construction joints and connections to drainage or protection layers require careful detailing.
Underground parking structuresFor underground parking, the waterproofing must be coordinated with the load-bearing structure, movement joints, ramps, drainage and operational loads. Selecting a single membrane does not resolve every detail; a compatible system and a complete design are required.
A project-specific solutionA below-ground structure is not an ordinary roof. The material and installation method depend on the water load and construction. GeoGard EPDM may be evaluated for certain geomembrane applications, but suitability for the structure and all details must be confirmed against the technical documentation and project design.
